I would ask your GI why they are downplaying diet for you--understanding his/her perspective might give you some peace of mind. Neuromodulator medications such as low dose anti-depressants can be quite helpful in the right patient. Like all IBS treatments, what works for one person, might not work for you. It's a bit of a trial and error situation----that takes patience.

After running various imaging and other test my gastro is saying I have sensitivity to gluten and probably ibs. He has me on omeprazole and famotitine and wants me to take an ssri. While I'm aware that antidepressants are sometimes used to treat gut issues I would prefer to use this as a last resort. He seems to be downplaying dietary solutions preferring a medication approach. My main symptoms is upper and lower gut pain and there are periods when it is chronic. No diarrhea, no constipation. I have a bowel movement at least once a day if not 2 or 3. In the course of treatment they removed my gallbladder so when I try to go on a more restricted diet I can't get enough calories because I experience even more pain when I eat fat. What do you think about treatment with antidepressants?

Alain, it is imperative you work with a dietitian to guide you--weight loss can further impact gut motility--which is not the goal! Also discuss the possibility of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth with your gastroenterologist --as SIBO can lead to intolerance to carbohydrates.

Hi, thanks for this special blog. I am lactose/ fructose intolerant and I was perfect with Low FODMAP diet but now I don’t tolerate more than 3g of sugar which is even in gluten free breads, no eggs, I even take lactose free milk with lactase enzyme and still having diarrhea sometimes, i am tall and losing weight for eating less every day. Is there anything low fodmap with No Fructose in it? Intestinal biopsies are normal. I don’t know what to eat. I appreciate any help, please.

As a general rule--I have found Smarty Pants vitamins to be made with cane sugar and tapioca syrup--so should be okay from low FODMAP diet standpoint. But, the version with fiber--would be high FODMAP as the first ingredient is inulin (chicory root) --a FODMAP source.

Would the SmartyPants gummy vitamins meet FODMAP criteria?
(They have the methyl folate and other activated B vitamins we both need. And much easier to get my husband to take than pills!)
