I would work with either a new doc or your old one to identify the best way to deal with your constipation. And I do believe it would be worth checking for methane gas via SIBO test. Have you heard about Commonwealth labs? They do home testing--maybe you could order a kit?

Wow I never even heard of that nor has my gastro mentioned it. I have had IBS for years and personally feel that stress adds to it. My gastro didn't test me for SIBO (she was trying to keep costs down bc I have lousy health insurance) but also said even if i had it she would put me on a Low FODMap Diet so I should just follow that. While I may be feeling a little better (I do cheat here and there) constipation is still a huge issue for me. If I don't go in the morning I feel bloated and yucky. And, when I do go, I still feel yucky sometimes and my stomach hurts. Any suggestions? Should I find a new gastro? I've been seeing her for years (for my colonscopies) but not necessarily "treatment" of my stomach issues because who can afford medical bills these days. I live in Brick, NJ if you have any suggestions. Thanks so much Kate! Your website is so informative I could spend hours reading...and I do!!

I love this post! You're so right that it often takes a team approach to treating functional gut disorders. For so long, I tried to do it by myself but that just didn't work and was often unnecessarily discouraging. I'm so thankful (like for real) I've found my treatment team! :)

Kate -- I feel so fortunate to have stumbled on your blog! I so appreciate your calm and information attitude. I've been trying to maintain a low fodmap diet for several weeks and now my doctor thinks its time to add foods back into the mix and see what happens. I don't think the low fodmap diet has totally changed my situation, but it has helped enough so that now, frankly, a little nerve-wracking to think about how best to add foods back. Do you have any suggestions? Do I bring back all gluten products and see what happens? Or some of the fruits I've been missing? Or things like onion and garlic which are ubiquitous and nearly impossible to totally avoid anyway? I'm also wondering if you have thoughts about how to find a dietitian. How do I know what particular skills or training will work best with my individual situation? I know it's a personal connection, but what types of certification, training, or approaches should I look for. Again, thanks so much! There are probably many of us who read your blog silently but are deeply helped by your advice, positive attitude, and information.
