Low FODMAP broth

Even though the weather is still gorgeous here in New England, the fall is sneaking up and around the corner.  Cooler weather translates to warm comfort foods–and soups certainly top the menu list.  Although most commercial broths contain onion and garlic, Savory Choice offers a  chicken, turkey and beef broth (both regular and reduced sodium), a liquid broth concentrate in a stick packet, that according to the manufacturer representative I spoke with are onion and garlic free!!  PicMonkey CollageJust mix each packet with 1 cup of hot water and you have your broth ready to go..  ready to whip up as part of your favorite soup starter.

Yay! Some of my client’s have tried these packets as part of their low FODMAP diet without a hitch.  Savory Choice chicken, turkey and beef broth are also gluten free and free of MSG.

Note: Savory Choice also offers a Pho broth option but I am not sure about the garlic or onion content. Also the vegetable broth has onions!

Of course, you can always make up some broth on your own which is so tasty and nourishing too… but this offers a quick and easy alternative.

      Thanks excellent. will have to checkout for UK and Ireland. Gluten free stock avail but they all contain onion, garlic, celery powder, protein with soya etc. I think perhaps it may be worth making some homemade chicken/beef/veg stocks with fresh herbs and freezing in ice-cube trays.

    My husband is vegetarian, so I’ve continued to use store-bought veggie stocks for our soups. I use half stock, half water to limit the FODMAPs. We’d rather make our own stock but really want some oniony flavor. Oh, and the time I made soup with just water and asafoetida, we both had big time GI problems.

    Are onions like garlic in that they could be cooked and removed from homemade stock without leaving fructans in the water? Thanks for any help you can provide!!

      Mary, Both onions and garlic added to water will have fructans which are water-soluble (mix w/ water) leach into the water. The only time you can infuse flavor with onion and garlic is via oil. Saute onion and garlic in oil (the water soluble fructans will NOT leach into the oil) and then remove the onion and garlic –but use the flavorful oil.

    This is GREAT! I was literally looking last night all over the place for an onion free soup or broth and couldn’t find one! I settled with rice noodles and miso. What a godsend this appeared today in my inbox – thank you so much!

    I emailed them to see if any of their Pho contained garlic/onion and they do. They recommended only these products :
    product free of onion & garlic, below are the products to look for:

    We found the chicken broth to be a little weak so I used 2 packets with 1 1/2 cups water and it was much more flavorful. Added rice and carrots and had a quick and easy soup for lunch.

    Just thought I’d share: another possible broth option for the low-FODMAP diet is Progresso’s new Tuscany chicken broth. The only listed ingredients are: Chicken Broth, Salt, Sugar, Natural Flavor (including thyme, rosemary, basil, oregano, and marjoram).
    I contacted the company to find out if there were any other “natural flavors” listed on the label, and they confirmed that the only ingredients were the ones listed. I am highly fodmap-intolerant, but I have been using this broth for the last few months without any adverse effects.
    It’s troublesome to find in the supermarkets, but I can find it easily enough online and have it delivered to home.

    First of all, I would like to say that you are a great inspiration when it comes to the low FODMAP diet. Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge!

    Im a nutritionist residing in Norway, and I do a lot of low FODMAP work here as well. I am looking over some of the broths available in the supermarkeds have only found a few that does not contain onions or garlic. I thought I had found a fish broth, the ingredientlist did not contain onions. But, of course – it contained “spices”. Hence I send an email to the producer and asked if the “spices” included any form of onions or garlic, which it did. 1,3 % onionpowder. Now, finally – my question is: Should this broth be avoided, or is the FODMAP content so low that it would be ok for most people with IBS?

    I just wanted to say “thank you” for sharing these low FODMAP broths. I haven’t had soup in a few years. I just don’t have the time to make my own stock…and I am highly sensitive to garlic and onions.

    I ordered the chicken flavored broth from Amazon. Last night, I made my first soup (from your 21 Day Tummy book)…and it was fabulous! Thank you so much!!!! Sometimes it’s the little things…

    The broth packets look very similar to the ones sold by Trader Joe’s. Do you know if those are also free of onion & garlic? Thank you.
